Bayern Munich has won everything there is to win both nationally and internationally and is a truly international club with millions of fans around the globe.
GERMANY
As the giants of German soccer, Bayern has seen some remarkable players and managers through the years. Amongst them, Franz Beckenbauer, Sepp Maier and Gerd Müller were pivotal in the golden years of the 1960’s, which brought world-wide acclaim to the club. The club holds the national record for all the major championships in the country. Their trophy cabinet includes an impressive 21 Bundesliga Championships, 14 German Cups and 4 League Cups. The club also boasts 4 European Cups. Players from Bayern Munich have been essential to the success of the German national team. Eleven ‘rebels’ formed the club at the Gisela Restaurant in Munich in 1900. One of them, Franz John, is given the credit for masterminding the split from their original club. 100 years later, another Franz, this time Beckenbauer, became its president.
Allianz Arena is home to Bundesliga’s Bayern Munich located in the north of Munich. The two professional Munich football clubs FC Bayern München and TSV 1860 München have played their home games at Allianz Arena since the start of the 2005/06 season. The ground holds 69,000, making it the one of the biggest football stadiums in Germany.
History:
Founded in 1900, Bayern Munich is the most successful club in German football, having won 21 German league titles and 14 cups. In the middle of the 1970s, the club had its period of greatest success, when the famous team led by Franz Beckenbauer won the European Cup three times in a row (1974–76). In recent years they have been by far the most successful team in German football, winning seven of the last ten championships. Since the beginning of the 2005–06 season, Munich plays its home games in the 69,901 seat Allianz Arena. The 1999–2000 season resulted in Bayern winning their third league and cup double. A third consecutive Bundesliga title followed in 2001. Days later, Bayern won the Champions League for the fourth time after a 25 year gap, defeating Valencia on penalties.
The club produced Germany’s footballer of the year eleven times between 1965 and 1981; Beckenbauer (4), Maier (3), Müller (2), Rummenigge (1) and Breitner (1). The club also holds the domestic record with five European players of the Year with Müller achieving it in 1970, Beckenbauer in 1972 and 1976, and Rummenigge in 1980 and 1981.
Sightseeing:
The land of beer, sausages, high mountains and deep forests manages effortlessly to combine the old with the new - magnificent castles stand on the outskirts of bustling cities where state-of-the-art technology is used by people in traditional folk-costumes.
Munich lies in the free-state of Bavaria in the south of Germany and is blessed with wonderful mountains, lakes and forests in close proximity to the bustling city centre. In addition to the spectacular natural beauty, visitors also flock to the region because of its rich cultural and historical heritage. Bavaria spends well over DM 100 million every year to preserve its unique cultural heritage and there are many signs that their efforts pay off. The eye-catching traditional costume of Lederhosen is for example still worn by many Bavarians, especially outside the big cities. Most visitors make sure they experience the famous Glockenspiel at Marienplatz, in Munich’s main square. The spectacle takes place every day at 11 o’clock and features 32 “nearly life size” figures depicting scenes from the town’s history. At the beginning of the last century, the area of Schwabing used to be a magnet for internationally known artists because of its relaxed and liberal lifestyle. Bertolt Brecht and Kadinsky were two of many artists that walked these streets, and Schwabing is still a good place to go if you want to quench your thirst. Many of the Alps’ famous mountain resorts lie a short drive away from Munich. The Spitzing area is a very popular area for a daytrip with locals and visitors alike. As most ski lifts operate all year round, anyone can enjoy the magnificent alpine views without getting sore muscles or out of breath.
