Newcastle United FC

A club with a proud tradition and passionate and loyal supporters, Newcastle United is one of the biggest and most powerful clubs in Europe.

History:

Newcastle United Football Club is an English football club founded in 1892 and currently in the English League Championship. They have won the First Division Championship four times and the FA Cup six times. In European competition the most notable honor the club has won is the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, in 1969. By 1955 Newcastle United had won as many major trophies as Liverpool and Manchester United combined, and as recently as 1970, only one other club in England (Aston Villa) had won more major trophies. Under the new leadership of former England great Alan Shearer, they are determined to remain in England’s top flight and regain some of the success they have had in the past.

ST JAMES’ PARK

Dominating the view as you approach it, St James’ Park stands on a hill overlooking the city of Newcastle.  As well as its spectacular surroundings, it is proud of being the oldest soccer stadium in the region, having staged an organized game of soccer in 1880. After extensive re-building it now has a capacity of over 50,000 and is a haven for enthusiastic soccer supporters flocking to the North-East of England. Indeed – nearly 90% of the seats are held by season ticket-holders!

Sightseeing:

Newcastle was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria, and there are a myriad of historical monuments and sights within the city and its nearby areas as a result. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that it is a city just for visitors interested in history. Newcastle is known as a lively and cosmopolitan city noted for its warm and friendly welcome. It lies in the heart of the beautiful region of Northumbria between the Scottish border and North Yorkshire. The region is famous for its stunning scenery and rich history and is Britain’s fastest growing tourist region. The scenery varies from long golden beaches to waterfalls and wilderness. Unusual and interesting stately homes and glorious gardens are also to be found, as well as numerous museums where you can soak up the heritage of the area.

No other region of England has as many castles and fortresses as Northumbria, which are a reminder of its wild and bloody history.  Perhaps the most impressive of all is Bamburgh Castle which stands high above the sea and is a treasury of Northern history. Medieval Durham is not to be missed. The castles, dating back to 1072, and the cathedral, which is considered to be the country’s finest example of Norman church architecture, are both World Heritage Sites. The North Pennines is an area of outstanding Natural Beauty and is a treat for anyone wanting to savor the simple pleasures in life. Hadrian’s Wall lies just north of it and is also worth a visit. It was once one of the most important frontiers in the entire Roman Empire. Spanning nearly 2,000 years of history - forts, museums and events bring Roman history to life.
