La Decima - The Road to Real Madrid's 10th Champions League title
During the season 2001/2002 Real Madrid CF won their 9th UEFA Champions League title with the infamous goal scored by Zinedine Zidane against the German opponent Bayern Leverkusen. That was the 3rd UEFA Champions League title won in five years time for the team.
What the Real Madrid CF supporters didn't know at that time was the long wait they had in front of them to win La Decima, the 10th UEFA Champions League title. Despite the fact that Real Madrid CF had Los Galacticos which included players such as Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos, David Beckham and Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima they couldn't make it to the final. Between the years 2004 and 2010 the team couldn't even make it through the round of 16.
In 2009 Real Madrid CF signed new players including Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema and Cristiando Ronaldo, they also hired a new coach in Jose Mourinho in 2010. This had almost immediate effect. In 2010 Real Madrid CF managed to get to the semi finals and did so for three consecutive seasons.
For the season 2013/2014 Real Madrid CF signed a new manager in Carlo Anchelotti and players such as Daniel Carvajal, Isco and the former Tottenham Hotspur player Gareth Bale. The season of 2013/2014 became one of the best in the club's UEFA Champions League history. Cristiano Ronaldo became all time top scorer of the UEFA Champions League with his 17 goals, he was also one of the players with most assists together with Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale. The team scored 41 goals in 13 games altogether, the highest average scored goals per game in UEFA Champions League history. However, the real magic in this game came from the fact that it was an all Madrid final, Real Madrid FC against Atletico Madrid. This demonstrated not only the high quality of Real Madrid FC but the excellence of the Spanish first division, La Liga.
The final at the Estadio de Luz in Lisbon, Portugal began with a goal from the Atletico Madrid player Diego Godin. The second goal in the game, which lead to a draw and extra time came from the Real Madrid CF defender Sergio Ramos. The team was all in, and managed to score three goals during the extra time by Marcelo Vieira, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo. The 2013/2014 therefore ended the Real Madrid CF supporters long wait and they could finally taste the sweetness of La Decima, the 10th UEFA Champions League title.
